Take advantage of tax credits available to homeowners and businesses in historic buildings ( and lets face it, if youlive in Butchertown odds are you live in a historic building) with this upcoming workshop in Frankfort.

A Workshop on the Kentucky Historic Preservation Tax Credits is from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm in Frankfort, KY, 202 Wilkinson Street on March 24th.  This one-day workshop will introduce you to the Kentucky Historic Preservation Tax Credit that is now available to owners of historic properties that are investing in the rehabilitation of those historic buildings.

For properties that are for commercial use, the credit allowed is 20% of the amount invested by the owner over a 24 month period.  For properties that are used as private residences the credit allowed is 30% of the amount invested.  Non-profit organizations that own historic properties can also take advantage of this program by transferring the credits earned. Participants will have lunch at the Orlando Brown House (1835) and tour Liberty Hall (1796) to see the rehabilitation work already completed and hear about plans for work still to be done.  Registration fee is $40 and includes refreshments, lunch, tour and materials.  For additional information or questions, call 502-227-2560 or e-mail touradmin@libertyhall.org.

Crocus blooming in March

Today is the vernal equinox, marking the first day of spring. Equinox is latin for equal night, and refers to day and night being of equal length that day. The vernal equinox marks the end of winter and beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

What is really neat is that tomorrow the sun will rise due east and set due west. Maybe that doesn’t sound special, but every day afterward  it rises and sets just a little bit farther to the north until the summer solstice on June 20, when the sun reaches its northernmost point along the horizon and actually seems to rise and set in the same place for a few days.

So why is the equinox special? Well, back before food was available year round, the vernal equinox signaled the start of the growing season that would replenish dwindling food supplies. The date is also significant in Christianity because Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

So go outside and enjoy the start of spring!

Thank you Louisville Metro for taking care of a problem area!

Louisville Metro Crew

We reported this dangerous section of sidewalk on the western part of Frankfort Avenue between Mellwood and Story a while back on Louisville Metro’s  See it- Click it- Fix it application on BrokenSidewalk, and today a crew was out trimming back grossly overgrown branches and debris. We often walk this section on our way to some of the places along Frankfort Avenue and were constantly ducking and trying to not to slide on account accumulated leaves.

I want to apologize for not posting pictures sooner from last weeks book signings at Presidential place, Borders, and the Urban Design Studio. The weather was so gorgeous that I just had to spend all my time outside and soak up as much sun as possible! Consequently, I didn’t get around to uploading any new pictures till now…

Coincidental with the arrival of warm weather this week, so too came to long awaited rollout of the directions “by bike” feature of Google Maps.

Eager to get the word out (and try out my amateur blogging skills), the following Google gadget will provide a safe, bike-friendly route to either the beginning or end of the Butchertown Greenway (via the “To:” drop-down) from any point in/around Louisville.

This link will allow you to click either pushpin and map yourself to/from the greenway.

Also worth mentioning is the Ride the City mapping service that has been available for some time now.

The weather is getting warmer — Butchertowners, get out and ride your neighborhood.  Out-of-Butchertowners, we cordially invite you to tour our historic ‘hood.  Be sure to check out the greenway if your ride takes you that direction or you have the time.

So the survey about the 9th District got me thinking about recycling, and then at work my co-worker showed me this: A National Geographic Game online to teach kids about recycling. After playing it several times I thought I’d pass it on to you and share the fun!

With the hope that Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh can and will dedicate a meager amount of community funds toward the few feet of paving necessary to complete the Butchertown Greenway’s termination at River Road, thus is the humble beginning of a cleanup of the existing greenway.

More information and photos after the jump.
